Woodstock to South East Greenway (Nore Valley Greenway)
Kilkenny County Council are seeking to develop a Greenway between Woodstock Estate near Inistioge and the South East Greenway near New Ross, using an integrated, comprehensive, and planned approach.
The proposed Greenway route will extend over approximately 17km to 20km and forms part of an overall vision and strategy for the development of an integrated network of active travel routes, greenways and blueways, as outdoor recreational amenities, for the region. The development of this proposed Scheme, as part of the overall regional strategy, will attract domestic and international visitors to come, explore and stay in the region.
It is currently envisaged that one of the major trailheads for the greenway link will be located in Woodstock Estate, near Inistioge Village. The Estate is home to Woodstock Gardens & Arboretum which contains a mixture of formal and informal gardens and two tree lined avenues: Monkey Puzzle Avenue and Noble Fir Avenue, along with Tea Rooms and the ruins of Woodstock House. Approximately 45,000 visitors visit the Gardens & Arboretum annually and these visitor numbers are forecast to increase significantly with the planned development of Woodstock.
Inistioge Village is an attractive tourist destination, particularly in the summertime. A heritage trail has been established for Inistioge, guiding tourists to notable sites, and the village has been a filming location for a number of movies. The village has won numerous awards, including a gold medal in the Entente Florale competition, and numerous gold, silver and bronze Tidy Towns medals.
