Slieverue to South East Greenway

It is an objective of Kilkenny County Council, as per the Kilkenny City & County Development Plan 2021-2027, to provide connections off/from the South East Greenway to settlements along its route.

5no. route options were considered between the South East Greenway and the village of Slieverue.

During the route selection process, it emerged that a looped route formed by the Kilmurry lane route (to the south) and the Luffany route (to the north) were preferred options. This overall loop route would best accommodate active travel by locals using the greenway and would provide the best facility to attract tourists to the village and tourism related activity in and around same.

The southern section involves the development of a pedestrian and cycle corridor circa. 2.1km in length, connecting Slieverue village from the new village park to the greenway where it intersects with Kilmurry lane.

In the main, this connectivity link will form part of a shared surface along the local road network with the exception of off-road infrastructure sections within the village core.

The southern section received Part 8 planning in January 2025.

Efforts have now turned to identifying potential funding streams to advance this project through detail design, land acquisition and construction stage.
